Fashion Disasters of the Decade

On New Year's Eve when all of my beautiful bloggers are putting on their sequins and gorgeous pretty things, I decided to re-visit some things that have hopefully been put to a permanent rest. The last decade has had quite a few fashion disasters to remember, or not remember. But everyone loves a train wreck, right? That's why I watch Jersey Shore.

Here are some of the low moments in fashion from the past decade.

Note to Madonna. You would not make a good Spanish bullfighter. Bulls would RUN from you. This outfit is just wrong from the tied shirt to the "M" low belt buckle. Oh wait. Maybe she's trying to be a cowgirl. Either way, this get up is a big fashion faux pas.

Ok, you may disagree with me, but I don't like this Versace dress at all. The media ooohed and ahhhed all over this dress, but Jennifer Lopez is just an inch of tape away from a major disaster. She must have used a few rolls of Hollywood tape when she wore that dress. It's just too much skin, even if you are Jennifer Lopez and are in great shape.

Bjork must have thought she was a cast member of Swan Lake at a pre-school when she chose this outfit. Seriously, what was she thinking. I'm not going to say anything else about this nightmare.

Here's another lost ballet cast member!! Lara Flynn Boyle looks silly in this tutu. Even the shoes are a train wreck. The only thing missing is a ballerina bun in her hair. No, that would be an insult to REAL ballerinas who don't wear their costumes on the street.

We can hope for better fashion sense in 2010, but I'm sure that this new year will bring many more fashion disasters for us to see.

Happy New Year to all of you!

New Year's Fashion

The countdown has started! 2010, twenty ten or two thousand ten, or whatever you plan to call it will soon be here. What are you going to wear to ring in the new year? Even if you aren't going somewhere special, you can always make a special occasion out of a night at home. Here's what is on my New Year's fashion list:

This gorgeous blue color is so flattering on so many complexions. At least 3 people told me, "Your eyes look SO BLUE." I tried on this dress and it fit so well, too. I love the beading and detail on the neckline; it's just right. Not too over the top, but super elegant. You'll get a million compliments on this one.

So when I saw this dress on the hanger, I didn't think that it looked like something that would be on my must have list. After I tried it on, I knew that I had to have it. It's the perfect black dress that works with almost any formal or semi-formal occasion. Words can't describe how truly Audrey Hepburn-esque this dress is. Reminds me of something that I would wear to a Soiree with Lester Lanin music. I'm still looking through old boxes from college for my Lester Lanin beanie, but I won't digress. . .

Yesterday, someone was asking about tights with formal dresses. Personally, even if I am going to freeze, I hate to wear pantyhose or tights with dressy dresses like Sidra and Kaya. Even though I can't get over the "white after Labor Day thing" and bring myself to break all of the rules, I proudly wear my open toed shoes all year long. Shopafrolic is a great blog that I found after reading about it on the Lilly website. Jane and Liz from Shopafrolic both agree that bare legs and sandals are a "DO" all year, too!

Let me know in the comments what you think! Do you wear open toed shoes all year? What are you going to wear this New Year's Eve?

Wishing everyone the best for 2010 and a very happy New Year's Eve!

Hello blog friends! It's a windy and cold morning here in Maryland. All the more reason to think about Lilly Pulitzer's gorgeous resort line. I've got some great scoop for you today!!

Persnickety Palm is having a special 2 day sale today and tomorrow. Fall and holiday are significantly reduced, but the big news is that EVERYTHING in the store is 30% off. This includes the uber popular Murfee scarves and all resort deliveries.

Linda, the owner of Persnickety Palm, is so sweet and would love to help you find some special Lilly. This morning, I picked up another Murfee in Shorely Blue Grand Scale Access to add to my growing collection.

There are lots of Murfee scarves in stock in Lilly's pink, Daiquiri pink, and Bright navy grand scale access. These scarves are flying out of stores quickly, so get yours today at an amazing price!

Easy & impressive chocolate treat!

Would you like a special treat to serve to your guests on New Year's Eve? Brigadeiros are a delicious Brazilian candy made with condensed milk. They are usually made in large batches for celebrations like birthday parties and special events. I love these for New Year's Eve because you can make them ahead of time and they look gorgeous, but are so easy to prepare. They also make a delicious gift.

You may even want to make them and put two or three in a small box, tie it up with a ribbon, and it makes a great party favor.

This time, I made my candies with pink sprinkles because you all know that I love anything pink, but you can use different sprinkles or toppings based on the desired look or specific holiday. At Halloween, I gave the girls' teachers orange Brigadieros and it was a hit!

Here's the recipe. Brigadeiros are super easy to make! The only thing I really recommend to you is that you actually put the butter on your hands before you roll the candy. I know, it feels kind of gross. I didn't like the idea of slathering butter on my hands, either, but the first time, the gooey candy stuck to my hands and I had a huge mess! Learn from my mistake. ;)

Instructions
1 can sweet condensed milk
3 tbsp unsweetened chocolate
2 teaspoons butter

sprinkles, chopped nuts, cocoa, or other toppings

1. Combine the condensed milk, chocolate powder and 1 tsp butter in a saucepan.
2. Stir until well combined and then place on the stove.
3. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden or metal spoon until the mixture starts to form small bubbles around the outside.
4. Once it starts to boil, reduce the heat to low, and add the other teaspoon butter.
5. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens. Keep stirring or the mixture will stick to the bottom of the pan.
6. Cook for 3 or 4 more minutes, stirring frequently. (You can end up stirring quite a bit in this recipe!)
7. Pour the contents of the pan onto a cookie sheet and spread it evenly across the surface until it is about 1/3 inch thick. Let it cool for a little while.
8. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
9. Take some butter in your hands and spread a bit of it into the palms of your hands.
10. Scoop up 1 tsp of the candy and roll it into a ball in the palms of your hands. Then drop into topping and cover.
11. Can be eaten fresh, refrigerated, or frozen.

Enjoy! I'd love to hear about any special recipes you may have for parties. I love entertaining.

New Year's Lychee Martini

Are you thinking about ideas for your signature drink on New Year's Eve? A Lychee Martini is a yummy option. It's pink, too, so it will match whatever I'm wearing!

The first time I had this drink was at La Madonna Martini bar in Cancun, Mexico. If you're planning a trip to Cancun, be sure to go to this delicious Italian-Swiss bar and grill. The food and service are impeccable.

Ingredients
1/4 C sugar
1/4 C water
1 C drained canned lychees (15 to 20, from a 16- to 20-oz can)
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
3/4 C vodka (preferably Grey Goose)
3 Tbsp Cointreau or other orange-flavored liqueur

Special equipment
Show off your Lilly style with your cocktail shaker while you prepare these drinks for your guests. My favorite is the Cocktail Shaker in Shaken Up.

Directions
Heat sugar and water in a small saucepan over high heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved, then pour into a heatproof bowl set in a large bowl of ice and cold water. Let stand, stirring occasionally, until syrup is cold, about 3 minutes.
Purée lychees with sugar syrup you already prepared and lemon juice in a blender until smooth. Put this through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding the solids. Fill cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes and add lychee purée, vodka, and Cointreau. Shake 15 seconds and strain into Martini glasses. Garnish with a lychee.

Tips
It’s easier to make a lot of the lychee mixture before your party and have it on hand to mix in the shaker with the vodka and Cointreau. I’ve had this made with only with lychee juice or lychee liqueur and can tell you that it’s certainly worth the extra effort to make the syrup for this delicious drink.

If you don’t like your drinks very sweet, you can use the lychee juice instead of the sugar and water mixture. You’ll get more of a lychee flavor and a less sweet drink. Personally, I LOVE the sweetness of the recipe just the way it is! Of course, some of your guests may want you to adjust the vodka:lychee ratio, too.

What drinks are you planning to serve this New Year's Eve? Have you ever made a "signature" drink for a party you hosted? I always enjoy making a drink that matches the theme of the party and the guests like to try something new and unexpected.

Have a happy Sunday!

Traditional Christmas

Good morning, "blends!" I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends who are near and dear to you.

One of my favorite things is the traditional Christmas Eve service. There is something so comforting and special about a service with hymns, Christmas carols, and the Christmas story read from the Bible.

The mini-peeps sing in the choir at church and enjoy it so much. Towards the end of the Christmas Eve service, the family who has most recently had a baby in the church presents the Christ child and places Him in the manger. The rest of the congregation sings Silent Night and the church is lit only by candlelight. It is so moving for me. I cry every year, but of course, I cry at commercials on tv, too.

Christmas morning was a whirlwind of activity with two minnies enjoying their presents! Natalia woke up at 5 a.m. and wanted to open her presents! She went back to bed for a little while and I let her open her stocking goodies at 6. Once the grandparents were ready to go, both girls then opened their surprises from "Santa" at 7:30. The only slip up was a J.Crew box addressed to me that I re-used for a costume for Alexia who asked why SANTA had MY box! OOOPS! Need to be more careful about that next year.

One great morning of presents, pajamas, and cookies for breakfast, two family gatherings, and lots of LOVE made for a wonderful Christmas day. What was your favorite Christmas memory yesterday?

As always, thanks for reading my blog. Lots of exciting news to share with you this week including decorating and fashion advice for New Year's Eve.

Have a FABULOUS day.

Night of the Radishes

Good morning! Happy Christmas Eve!

Today, while I celebrate Christmas Eve in Maryland, I'm thinking of some of my favorite holiday traditions from Mexico. I lived in Mexico for 10 years. A large part of that time, I lived in Oaxaca, a UNESCO heritage site, located in southern Mexico. Noche de Rabanos, Night of the Radishes, is a wonderful Oaxacan tradition held on December 23 every year.

The tradition dates back to colonial times, when missionaries taught natives how to cultivate radishes, which grow to extraordinary sizes. Today the radishes are grown locally and are carved into amazing works of art.

The festival is held in the Zocalo, Oaxaca’s Main Square, in front of the Government Palace. A great exhibition of figures made of radishes is on display. Figures of animals, humans, saints, and other characters are made using only the radish! Artists are rewarded for their ingenuity and skill through a variety of contests. Corn husks and a dried flower called "totomoxtle" are also made into beautiful designs.

After you enjoy the sights of the radishes, you can enjoy a buñuelo, fried dough bathed in a sugary syrup and some world famous Oaxacan hot chocolate at one of the cafes in the main square. My favorite is the Jardin.

I’ll share more about my adventures in Oaxaca in other blog posts.
Merry Christmas Eve!

Preppy Presents

Good morning, BLENDS. Are you wondering what a "blend" is? Beth, at Social Climbers, mentioned the term "blend", a blog friend. I love the terminology!

Hope that everyone is enjoying the week. I've been busy here getting things ready for Christmas for my minnies and for family and friends.

As most of you know by now, I LOVE all things crafty. Here are some of my latest creations.

The Lilly Pulitzer paper products are absolutely amazing and the quality is top notch. The wrapping paper is a substantial weight and is concealing all of my non-Santa gifts this season.

I used wrapping paper to create these adorable clipboards which were gifts for some very special Lilly loving ladies. First, I used scrapbooking adhesive to put the wrapping paper on the clipboard. Then, using a brush, I covered the clipboard with a light coat of Mod Podge. You have to be careful to smooth the edges as you cover the board with the Mod Podge. The final step is to spray clear acrylic on the board to "fix" it. So easy and pretty!

There's nothing I love more than getting a gift I can share with others. Mixes in a jar are a perfect gift for people who love to bake or cook. I've made soup mixes, hot cocoa mixes, and cookie mixes. This is a modified oatmeal chocolate chip Bakerella recipe. Rebecca was kind enough to make the labels for the jars. Of course, I had to bake a batch for myself, quality control, you know. They were DELISH!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Wednesday!

MAC in Lillyland

Lilly Pulitzer fans! Mark your calendar because MAC is teaming with Lilly Pulitzer to launch a special edition collection of cosmetics called MAC in Lillyland. Available on January 7, 2010, this collection will include brushes, nail polish, lip gloss and more. I'm giddy just thinking about it and Minnie #1 has already asked if she is allowed to wear the Lilly lip gloss. She still loves to play dress up!

This shadow is GORGEOUS. I think it would look great to wear it with the pink shade all over the lid, the green in the contour area, and the white to highlight the brow.

Here's a makeup trick for you. A few weeks ago, I had a makeup lesson and learned that I had been using contour in the "wrong" place. If you open your eyes and raise your brow slightly, THAT is your contour area. The makeup artist instructed me to make a straight line with the makeup brush from the contour line and THEN fill in the space down to the crease. It made a HUGE difference in the appearance of my eyes. People have been commenting on my makeup ever since I started doing this.

Want that Palm Beach look? Check out this gorgeous face powder. I'm loving it!

The prices for MAC in Lillyland are very accessible and allow you to have a little bit more Lilly in your life for a relatively small cost.

Lipgelee $14.00
Pearlmatte Eyeshadow $19.50
Pearlmatte Face Powder $27.50
Cremeblend Blush $18.50
Paint Pot $16.50
Technakohl eyeliner $14.50

P.S. Don't forget to enter my Giveaway before Tuesday's deadline. You have a chance to win some more Lilly to add to your collection!

Snow day!

Hello! There's already 10 inches of snow on the ground and it is only 10 a.m! It's still snowing so much and it's not supposed to stop all day! I LOVE to wear my Lilly Pulitzer swellies. Look how pretty they are in the snow!

Last night I braved the crowds and got the requisite bread, milk, and eggs. Why do people always buy those things? There were hardly any eggs left in the store! We've got all kinds of goodies to make cookies and hot chocolate today and enjoy the beautiful view of the snow.

We went outside already this morning so that the minnies could play. Of course, they lasted about an hour and came into the house soaked, but they had so much fun. I'm sure that they'll want to go back outside once their clothes have dried!

***** Update *****

Our snow total is up to 18 inches now and it is still snowing! I'm really hoping that the snow stops soon because we have tickets to see the Rockettes tomorrow. The minnies are really looking forward to this. The shows today were cancelled. Keeping my fingers crossed.

My handmade cards

Good morning, blog friends! Tomorrow we're supposed to get A LOT of snow. One tv station says that we'll get a MINIMUM of 8 inches and a more dramatic station is projecting up to 24 inches of snow!

It looks like a perfect weekend to stay at home, stay warm, and be crafty! When I'm "stuck" at home, I tend to do one of two things: cooking/baking or crafty-type things. Of course, I could always clean, do laundry, or the other million and one things that need to be done, but it makes me happy to do something fun. Tomorrow's going to be a crafty day. I'm going to make some handmade cards.

Every month, I get together with a group of friends for a Stamp Club. It's a blast since we talk, eat, drink and make several cards during the course of an evening. These are some cards that I've made with my stamping friends.

This card is pretty unique and special. The white lettering is actually embossed. We used an embossing stamp and then poured embossing powder over the ink while it was still wet. Then I "fixed" it with the heating tool. The border of the paper was cut with a special punch from Stampin' Up. To get the pretty yellow flower, I sponged yellow ink on the originally white flower with a sponge tool. Tied up with a ribbon, it's a great card for a special person!

One of my favorites! I also recreated this card in pink and orange, one of my favorite color combinations. Basically, this is a fairly simple card to assemble, but requires a lot of prep work. The ovals are punched and the border is decorated with a punch. Papers are layered to create this gorgeous card. Brads and corner punches also add a great detail!

This was one of the most difficult cards I have ever made, but it was SO worth it. The first step was to take a long rectangular strip of paper for the flower and score it with a scoring tool. I used the scoring blade of my paper cutter. Spacing every 1/4 inch on the paper to score makes it easy to make the accordion fold of the flower. A round punched dot hides any imperfections in the center of the flower and adds a great detail. I tore the bottom of the green paper to give it a rough edge and used a small twig as the stem. Love this card!

Sending cards is a lost art. Handmade cards can make someone's day. I'd like to get together a list of people who would like to get "snail mail" on a regular basis. Are YOU interested in joining?

Thrifty Thursday ~ Sales every day!

One of my favorite things to do is find good deals on things on my wish list. When I can SPAVE, spend and save, at the same time, it's even better. Admit it, you like to spave, too!

About three years ago, I started an excel spread sheet with all of my Lilly purchases to keep track of the print and style names. In an effort to try to justify my purchases, I listed the retail price and the price I paid. After a few VERY successful warehouse sales, my savings percentage was pretty high and I felt good about my savings!

Now you can get great items for less every day! There are quite a few "members only" shopping websites out there and Gilt and Ruelala are two of my favorites. These websites offer members prices similar to a sample or warehouse sale from different brands that change on a daily and weekly basis.

Every day at 11:00, new boutiques open on Rue La La. It's worth it to login to the boutique right at 11, because sometimes the boutiques sell out of popular items within MINUTES. Yes, I'm serious. I've had things in my shopping cart that were sold out by the time I wanted to pay for them. Last year, there was a Lilly Pulitzer boutique and Vineyard Vines is a Rue La La regular. Yesterday they had a Kate Spade home boutique with great household items like glassware. Don't miss anymore of the amazing Ruelala sales, click on the link for your invitation.

Gilt starts their sales at noon every day. Gilt is extremely fast with shipping and packages things very nicely. Some orders have arrived to me the next day after a 12 noon sale! Gilt is a little bit different from Rue La La because they have different sites with different types of products. There is Gilt Fuse, a more modern, contemporary collection of boutiques and Jetsetter, an amazing travel site. They feature amazing getaway options and upscale hotels. Burberry is featured today for men along with Gucci watches and Prada parfums.

I've also had really good luck with children's clothing on Gilt from lines like Jacadi, Lola et Moi, and CZ Kids. Their jewelry and accessories are also TDF! Another nice feature that Gilt offers is the ability to put your name on a wait list for sold out items. Here's your personal invitation to join Gilt.

For my Lilly loving blog friends, the Sale Shack at C.Orrico is a great resource for Lilly Pulitzer at a great price. You can find things that you may have missed from past season at the Sale Shack and other preppy goodies. A few seasons ago, I found a green Jacqueline Lilly Pulitzer dress at an amazing price here, it was unbelievable.

Hope you're all having a fantastic Thursday and getting ready for Christmas next week! Today I wrapped TENS of presents, but have finished wrapping everything for my girls.

Did you leave a comment for my Lilly contest yet!?

Stocking stuffers for little girls!

Hello blog friends! I have to preface today's post by telling you that I have 8 year old twins who are probably the most girly-girl little girls that you could ever meet; and I LOVE it! It is so much fun to shop for them. They like everything pink, fancy, shiny, and over the top! They are super preppy and love their Lilly just like me. Here are some ideas that I have for their stocking stuffer gifts.

This adorable Angela Moore pony tail holder is perfect for pigtails or ponytails.

Another great item from Angela Moore is a little bracelet. I love to wear Angela Moore's bracelets and my girls love it that they have their own that fit them perfectly. Everything is proportioned for tiny hands and fingers.

Although this bag is a little bit too big for a stocking, I can't resist spilling the beans about this great company. Two dear friends from college are starting to sell their bags in some upscale boutiques and they are just too cute! My favorite is the pink dog bag, but they are also making them in lobsters and other critters. Bags come in different sizes, some with a zipper. A great bag to take to dance class, to a sleepover, or to the beach.

This book is part of a series of delightful cookbooks that moms and kids with both love. There are Mermaid party recipes, Spa party recipes, and fairies as part of this collection. Such a great idea for birthday parties, classroom parties, or any special day. A friend gave my girls two of these books this weekend, and they literally spent HOURS looking at the recipes and talking about what they were going to serve at their next soiree!

Hope that you like some of my preppy girl stocking stuffer ideas! Have a wonderful day!

Riding the Lilly Jeep in the Parade!

On Saturday, my dear daughters had the wonderful opportunity to ride in the Lilly Jeep in a holiday parade in Leesburg, Virginia. The Jeep was sponsored by a lovely Lilly store called Persnickety Palm. The weather was gorgeous and not too cold, so it was a perfect day!

We got to the store bright and early to meet Persnickety Palm owner Linda and Ashley from Lilly Pulitzer corporate. My daughters instantly fell in LOVE with Ashley and proclaimed her as being "so cool and FASHION!" Here my minnies pose in the Jeep with Ashley.

We went to find a good parade spot on King Street to watch the festivities and were so happy to see the Jeep headed our way! The girls were giving their best "parade wave" and the expression on their faces was priceless! Linda had given the girls pink and white Santa hats to wear and reindeer antlers with pink ribbons on them. It was too cute!

After the parade, the girls posed with their friends and Ashley in front of the Jeep! They were thrilled to wear their new Lainey dress from Resort and it kept them so warm. Moms and grandmas, RUN to get a Lainey for the minnie in your life. The dress is an incredibly comfortable velour fabric and is perfect for school or the playground. My girls wore leggings with their dress and UGG boots, but it looks great with tights for a dressier look.

Persnickety Palm had lots of in store specials on Saturday. I was lucky to get a beautiful patch Lilly stocking and other goodies when I picked up some of my resort favorites.

Keep reading the blog and look for a special giveaway later this week!

Be sure to vote in my Lilly Pulitzer dress poll.

Panda-mania!

Good morning blog friends! Thanks for following me and my pink and green adventures. Lately, I've been thinking so much about Tai Shan, the panda at the National Zoo.

We've watched Tai Shan grow up from when he was born and was the size of a stick of butter, to the little cub, to the 4 year old "adolescent" that he is now. It's been a great experience. His whole life has been chronicled by the now famous Panda Cam and he is a zoo celebrity. No trip to the zoo is complete without a trip to see him. They're even going to make a Tai Shan stamp.

Now, he's going back to China in January or February of 2010 and I'm going to miss the little guy.

Pandas are an endangered species, due to loss of habitat and a low birthrate. Conservation efforts from the past few years seem to be improving the situation, but this amazing animal is still at risk.

When I went to the Pink Palace after winning a contest on facebook, I had the opportunity to see some sneak peeks at upcoming prints and I've heard that there will be a panda print in the near future! Here's a picture from WWD.

Many Lilly Pulitzer prints feature animals and this spring will bring some special surprises and a partnership with (WWF) World Wildlife Fund.

I'm going to miss Tai Shan, but at least I can remember him when I wear the Lilly Pulitzer panda shift from spring. For now, both will be at the top of my list.
