Thatchers' Fine Timeless Fabric

I’m thrilled to present the most exquisite line of fabric to you today. Maryland Pink and Green is proud to have Becky Thatcher and the team from Thatcher’s Fine Timeless Fabric as guest bloggers today. Talking with Becky has been such an interesting experience! Her travels in France to visit the mills and present the fabric are fabulous stories that could fill many, many blog posts. It is so interesting to hear how these creations are made. The art of the designs, by Leigh Martin Hooten, with the support and encouragement of Martha dePoo, inspired by Suzie Zuzek dePoo, is done by hand, without the use of computer. In today’s world that seems so automated and computer assisted, it is refreshing to hear about a company that still preserves traditional techniques. The designs come from the head, to the heart, to the hand. Enjoy this fantastic article that Thatcher’s has to share with Maryland Pink and Green readers.

Becky surrounded by Thatchers’ fabric

Step into the classic world of Thatchers’ Fine Timeless Fabric, which marries exquisite designs with the brilliant color combinations and quality, fit for Versailles.

In her desire to duplicate her family’s bespoke heirloom boudoir chair that mother and daughter could hand down through generations, Becky Smith introduces an exciting new collection of elegant fabrics offered by Thatchers’ Fine Timeless Fabric.

“The Thatcher” Heirloom Chair w/macroons. Fabrics shown: Les Trois Princesses de la Mer, Le Jardin des Princesses.

Never before has the market seen patterns reminiscent of the 1960’s Camelot era, beautifully captured in photographs by Slim Aarons, printed on the highest quality cotton with a light glaze. The final product is cotton chintz that any Lilly lover would adore.

Smith, founder of Thatchers’, presents her “Princesses Collection”, a quartet of high-quality cotton glazed chintz designed by the renowned Key West artists whose iconic designs catapulted socialite Lilly Pulitzer, and her Lilly brand, into the fashion world of the 1960’s to the 1980’s.

Thatchers’ nonpareil fabric is table screened and exclusively printed at a 150 year old mill in France. This world famous mill, which includes Hermes and Versailles on its client list, has produced fabric for the top fabric families for generations and for their clients the world over, including her muse and great, great grandmother, interior decorator Babou Warfield, as well as another relative, the Duchess of Windsor.

Celebrating the Debut of the Princesses in Paris

The first collection enjoyed its debut in Paris, on the Avenue Montaigne. Decidedly a pink and green color palette for the initial collection, this work of art is fun and fresh, to be enjoyed by all ages for generations to come.

Smith’s inspiration comes from the comfort associated with John Fowler, Elsie de Wolfe, even Coco Chanel, yet with a sense of style that embodies the bold use of color, a creative imagination, and Dorothy Draper’s element of fun. This is coupled with, especially in today’s world, the desire to “recreate the harmony of our more elegant past… the tranquility promised by having such things around us satisfies a deep need that is denied by most present-day alternatives. It seems that the past inspires our enthusiasm because it represents values of greater permanence than the mere ephemera of fashion or … design obsolescence.” Chester Jones on Colefax & Fowler. The values sought by the founders of the luxury lifestyle are present in Thatchers’ business philosophy and every aspect of this small, intimate company.

While the fabric was originally created for use on “The Thatcher”, the heirloom chair, its use is limited only by one’s imagination. It is perfect for draperies and upholstery on walls and furniture, in any room of your city house or country house. A small space filled entirely with this wonderful chintz is candy for your eye. Crisp and fresh, it makes a fabulous statement in little spaces.

Thatchers’ is looking towards the future, bright with color, all the while maintaining the history of exquisite design and craftsmanship. Authenticity of the fabric is evident in Thatchers’ creative use of the calligraphic “t” hidden in each design.

The color team at the mill is affectionately known as “l'équipe rose et verte”, or “the pink and green team”.
