What's that sauce?

Alice from Summer is a Verb was recently telling me about the Michelada she had on vacation in Ixtapa, Mexico. She was asking me about the other sauce that was used in the drink besides Worcestershire sauce. I started thinking about how exactly to describe Salsa Maggi to Alice. It’s not exactly soy sauce because it does not have soy in it, but it tastes very much like soy sauce. It’s used in so many recipes in Mexico, although I think that the sauce is actually from Switzerland. Maggi is made by Nestle and is used in everything from drinks like Micheladas to soups and appetizers.

Maggi can be found in the international foods section of your favorite grocery store and is available online at many specialty food stores. Amazon.com even has my beloved Salsa Maggi!

Here’s one of my favorite recipes made using Maggi sauce. Artichoke Carpaccio is an easy and elegant appetizer.

Artichoke Carpaccio
Serves 4

Ingredients:
1/2 pound artichoke hearts
1/3 cup parmesan cheese, freshly grated
1/2 cup olive oil
1 tbsp minced Parsley
1 tsp Maggi sauce (can be found in the international foods section)
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp lime juice
Pinch of salt
freshly ground pepper to taste
Any variety of thinly sliced bread

Preparation:
1. Thinly slice the artichoke hearts. Divide the artichoke on 4 plates.
2. Prepare the dressing, mixing the Worcestershire sauce, lime juice, Maggi, and olive oil. Add salt and pepper to taste.
3. Add the sauce to the artichoke.
4. Lightly toast the bread, and then cut into triangles.
5. Sprinkle the artichokes with Parmesan cheese and parsley. Serve the Carpaccio with the toast.

  1. omg, I love Maggi Sauce. Growing up in Germany, I have memories of my grandmother's cook sprinkling it on hard-boiled eggs before serving them to me! It's also really good in soups and stews! My local Publix sells it right next to the Steak Sauces and Condiments, but you can def. find it in the Asian section of most grocers.
