$1.70 Spent!

There's nothing better than spending pocket change and getting a bag full of cute little things. On a recent visit to Michael's, I spent only $1.70!

Look at all of the goodies I found! These items had been part of the dollar collection at Michael's and they were trying to make room for new spring merchandise. The little note cards are perfect to tuck in with packages and gifts. I am using the pretty post it notes to mark pages I need at work in books. The minnies wanted the colorful tape and playing cards and I love the zebra print mailing labels. It was like Christmas!!

There was quite a selection of 10 cent goodies, but the dollar section has some things that I really like, too. These little trinket dishes would look pretty at a party or place setting. The green bamboo is my favorite.

More pretty note cards in a mosaic style...

Matching plates complete the set...

The minnies each wanted a stamp to "monogram" some plain notecards they have.

Little things like this make it fun to "splurge." What fun things are at your Michael's? The dollar spot at Target is another favorite of mine!

Happy Saturday! Today is going to be a day at home. These two weeks have been so incredibly busy and next week is packed, too. Grades are due at school, then we have parent conferences, huge inventory lists and purchasing lists are all due on Monday. Whew! Somehow I'll get through it. I think I've operated on about 4 hours of sleep for the past week.

Pretty Pink Table

While I was looking at some party ideas, I came across this adorable grass mat. I simply must have this!

See more gorgeous goodies here.

Where are your favorite places to buy party goodies online? I love finding new etsy sellers and would love to hear your recommendations.

Happy Friday!

The Adventures of Flat Stanley

A few weeks ago, my college friend Amy mentioned that some students at her school were learning about Flat Stanley. My minnies LOVE Flat Stanley and were so excited about taking him around town for a little visit.

Here's an excerpt of the carefully written letter that Andrea wrote to my minnies:
Our class read the book Flat Stanley. It is about an average boy who was flattened by a bulletin board. His family mailed him away for an adventure. I am mailing Flat Stanley to you so he can have an adventure. Please take him with you wherever you go.

We are studying communities and would love for you to take some photos to show us the types of communities Flat Stanley has visited. I will be sharing his adventure and tracking his adventures on a map. I hope you have fun with Stanley and thank you for helping with this project.

While he was with us, Flat Stanley visited the pool. It's so nice to go swimming in the winter! Unfortunately, he forgot his swimming trunks, but he had fun watching the minnies swim and kept me company while we sipped Diet Coke together.

We go to the Post Office almost every day. The minnies are so helpful with all of my packages and letters and love to go to the post office. All of the postal workers know my girls by name and they enjoyed meeting Flat Stanley. Here's one of our favorite ladies at the post office with Stanley.

Frederick is well known for the trompe l'oeil paintings in the Historic District. Trompe l'oeil painting is about fooling the eye into experiencing three dimensions where there is really only a flat surface, kind of like Stanley!

The community bridge looks like individual stones from a distance but is actually a huge mural made to look like stones. Each stone is something representative of Maryland or Frederick. When we went to visit the bridge with Flat Stanley, we spied stalks of wheat, crabs, and other scenes in the mural.

We love Mexican food! La Paz is one of our favorite downtown restaurants and Flat Stanley really liked it, too! Here he poses for the camera with the minnies and our server at the restaurant. Be sure to try their guacamole. It's the real deal.

This weekend, Flat Stanley has a few more adventures before we return him to sweet Andrea on Monday.

He's going to visit Mt. Olivet Cemetery where Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star Spangled Banner, is buried.

We're also going to stop by Rose Hill Manor, the retirement home of Maryland's first governor, Thomas Johnson. There's a playroom for children that is hand-on. Children are encouraged to play with the old toys and dress in colonial clothing. My minnies especially love the old tea set and cast iron toys. We might even be able to get some mint tea if we're lucky!

Thank you, Andrea and Ms. Padgett's Class! We have had so much fun with Flat Stanley on his adventures in Maryland.

Rent a Lilly Dress!

Imagine my surprise when I found out that Rent the Runway is now stocking the latest styles from Lilly Pulitzer in addition to the fabulous brands they already offer.

If you’re not familiar with Rent the Runway, you’re in for a treat!

This members only website offers dresses from the current season from top designers for short term rental...perfect for special occasions. How many times have you paid hundreds of dollars for a dress that you wear only once or twice? If you’re anything like me, your closet is full of special occasion dresses worn only once.

A much better solution is to rent a dress at dramatically reduced prices. It is not a novel concept, but is unfamiliar to many people. Rent the Runway has this down to a science and takes all of the guesswork out of the process.

Worried you won’t get the right size? In between sizes? You get to choose two sizes of the dress so that you’re sure it fits. Fit consultants are also available for a live online chat to answer questions. Their advice on body type is so helpful, too. For petite peeps like me, the full length gowns are available in two lengths for each size. No hemming needed.

Not sure about the dress you chose? You can rent a second option dress for only $25 and decide between the two options. I also like the add on option of a second dress for weekends when you might have two or more events.

Your selections are shipped to you in time for your event and are in pristine, freshly cleaned condition. When you’re finished, simply place the dress in the pre-paid shipping box and return. No need to worry with cleaning or laundering.

Here are some Lilly Pulitzer dresses that are brand new in stores that you can rent!

Adelson Jacquard dress in Bright Navy…this would be perfect for a shower or other special event. The fabric of this dress is so substantial and has a gorgeous detailed texture. Pictures don't do justice to this dress ~ trust me on this one! Pair it with a Shere or Babs in metallic gold lurex and you'll look amazing. It's one of my favorite looks and is so versatile.

The Whitaker dress is such a great little date night dress. The print is the newest Lilly has to offer and is flying off the rack at full price. The Shorely Blue Optical Confusion is part of the Pop Art collection and is a comfortable and flattering silk jersey fabric.

Brides and graduates take note…and reserve early! The Bowen dress is quickly becoming an annual favorite among those in the know. Look fabulous at your rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, or graduation in this stunning dress. I love the lace detail. You can reserve rental dates in advance for dresses on Rent the Runway and I would encourage you to do so, especially with a dress like the Bowen that is sure to be a favorite in May and June.

Pink and orange? Almost as good as pink and green! The Nadia dress is so flattering. I especially love the detail at the neckline. These silk stripes will take you anywhere in style.

Other favorite brands featured on Rent the Runway include Milly, DVF, and Lela Rose. Rent the Runway is a budget friendly way to wear the most recent styles without damaging your bank account too much. Here’s your invitation to Rent the Runway.

Enjoy your Wednesday! This week is flying by because we had a holiday on Monday for President's Day. Yesterday was a snow day. So I can't believe that it's already Wednesday.

National Margarita Day

Even since the groundhog predicted an early spring, we've been on a crazy roller coaster ride. Last week, the temperatures were in the 70's and people sported sandals and warm weather togs. Today, I woke up to 6 inches of snow.

But today is National Margarita Day, so I'm just going to pretend that I'm somewhere sunny and warm. After all, a Margarita in Spanish is a Daisy. Daisies, sunshine, and all things warm. Visualize it.

I've given you lots of recipes for yummy drinks from my beloved Mexico, but today's version is from Bethenny Frankel. Her recipe for the Skinny Girl margarita skips the syrup and the sugar, eliminating lots of pesky calories. Swimsuit season is almost here, after all! I do modify it a little bit because of my fondness for diet Fresca.

*2 oz of Clear Premium Tequila (count 1, 2 while you pour, no need for measuring)
*Tiny splash of Orange Liquor
*Splash of Diet Squirt
*Juice of 4 Fresh Lime Wedges

1.To serve on the rocks, combine all ingredients over a glass of ice and garnish with a lime wedge.

If you're not on the Skinny Girl plan, here's an extra dose of eye candy to celebrate National Margarita Day! One little cupcake couldn't have that many calories, could it?

Vineyard Vines Party at Tysons

Last week, I attended the Grand Opening celebration of the Vineyard Vines store in Tysons Galleria. Although the store has been open for several months, last week was the perfect time for a spring soiree. As the temperatures approached 70 degrees, the wardrobe of the party guests at Vineyard Vines included gorgeous strapless dresses, sandals, and shorts.

The minnies and I walked towards the store and were immediately drawn to the gorgeous color theme of the spring collection where pinks, blues, and greens predominate. The look is very “old school preppy” and is so timeless.

Don’t you just love these bowties? The red crab bowtie is such a perfect Maryland tie! Another print that was so incredibly clever was a “hot dog.” There was an adorable dog with big ears flapping in the breeze while cooling off with a fan.

There was something for everyone at this party. The music was loud and fun and the atmosphere reminded me of a warm weather college party circa 1993. Yummy food and tasty drinks were on the menu. Everyone ended up with a foam whale hat, too!

The minnies made a friend at the party. I was loving this little boy in his bow tie! Beyond adorable.

It looks like the smiling whales are kissing! Love it!

It was so great to see my friends Jonathan and Caitlin at the party.

Jennifer from Sky Blue Events did a fabulous job with the event.

Wendy is another one of my favorite peeps.

A store with part of a boat for a cash register area is pretty cool, but these ties make it even more interesting! The very first people who visited the store when it first opened signed ties that now are interesting decorations. Of course, I noticed the Sigma Nu letters right away on the first tie...I just spent a little bit of time there during my college days. When I wasn't at the library! haha

Now all I have to do is wait for a warm day to wear my blue and white striped strapless dress I got at the party...

Thanks to Jennifer for the sweet invitation and to the peeps at Vineyard Vines for such a fun event!

Sandal Weather

Spring, you're such a tease! Yesterday we had gorgeous temperatures in the 70's and both of the minnies wore sandals to school. To be honest, we've all been waiting for a day that is lovely enough to wear sandals. Yes, I know that it's February, but I'm ready to come out of hibernation. Of course, today we have 45 mph winds and it is so cold.

I love Jack Rogers sandals and wanted to share some of my favorites with you for spring.

The Marbella espadrille is so pretty and preppy. Being named after a jetsetter favorite in the South of Spain adds even more "cool" factor to these sandals. Marbella is so beautiful! I'll never forget when a bunch of girlfriends and I decided to take the speed boat day trip to Morocco when we were in southern Spain one summer. Whew, that is a trip I'll never forget. Crazy!!! But that's another story...I had flash backs of that trip when I saw SATC 2 and the girls unknowingly end up in the black market...enough said!

When I'm lounging poolside, I often worry about ruining the soles of my favorite sandals. These jellies are a perfect solution! Great Jack Rogers style that is perfect for boat or beach.

The most classic, and my most favorite sandal, is the monogrammed sandal. I love the green ones.

Is it sandal weather where you live yet? Do you have a certain time of the year or a specific temperature you have to consider it sandal weather?

Nautical Spring

I've been on a nautical kick this week. From my recent Sperry Top Sider find to the adorable Vineyard Vines dress I picked up at this week's party, I'm in love with all things nautical.

Aren't Christian Louboutin Pepi espadrille wedges beyond words gorgeous? Imagine them with crisp navy maxi length dress as you enjoy a warm spring or summer day.

Just slightly obsessed with these.

Pink & Green Rooms

Happy Pink and Green Thursday! How is your week? It's been busy here with lots of activities for Valentine's Day and the Grand Opening party last night at Vineyard Vines.

Today I'm joining my sweet friend Trish for this week's installment of Pink and Green Thursday. I recently re-decorated and re-organized the minnies' room with some fun goodies from Garnet Hill and thought that you might enjoy some pink and green decorating ideas for bedrooms.

This pink closet reminds me of something that Carrie Bradshaw's character would have. Isn't it divine?

Jonathan Adler bedding adds a splash of color...

Luckily I had girls because so I can surround myself with pink! And luckily my girly-girls have always loved their pink and green, even as babies.

Some little girls want the tulle fairy netting above their minnies want the beach cabana. Such little preppies!

Although this Lilly Pulitzer bedding from Garnet Hill is no longer available online, it remains one of my favorites.

Can I just tell you how much I adore Jonathan Adler? This Adler designed pink gingham kids' room is a dream!

Enjoy your day!
