Time to Eat the Donuts

Today is Shrove Tuesday, the day before lent begins. In Maryland, we are often strongly influenced by the Pennsylvania Dutch, our northern neighbors known for their rich and delicious food. We can thank them for whoopie pies, shoofly pies, and fastnachts.

Fastnachts, donuts that usually do not have a hole, are only available during this time of the year. Traditionally, families would use up all of the fat in the kitchen by baking these rich pastries before Ash Wednesday. The pastries are usually sprinkled with sugar or powdered sugar, although I've seen many other varieties, including filled donuts.

So have a donut today and enjoy! After all, it's only Fat Tuesday once a year.
