The Side Trip: Nemacolin Woodlands

This weekend I made a Mommy-mini-vacation detour en route to pick up the minnies from summer camp to the most wonderful resort. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is a paradise tucked in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania.

As you drive up main road leading up to the resort, you’re immediately amazed by the gorgeous landscaping, flowers, and setting, but nothing can compare to seeing the impressive Chateau. There are a variety of different accommodations at Nemacolin from the Chateau to townhouses. I prefer the Lodge because of its location, although I’d love to stay at Falling Rock, designed in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. The townhouses are ideal for families or groups.

There are so many activities at Nemacolin that people of all ages can stay as occupied or relaxed as they want to be from morning until night. I particularly enjoy the Art Tour of the Hardy Family Art Collection. Does the glass look gold to you? If you said yes, then you’re correct. The gold color is a result of actual gold being used in the glassmaking process!

Hermes scarves line a long hallway at Nemacolin.

The pool is a great way to take a break, too! Art is everywhere at Nemacolin, even the entrance to the pool. Don’t you love the chairs with the Nemacolin shade to protect your skin from the sun’s rays?

I temporarily lost my mind decided to be brave and take a ride on the Fatbird Flyer Zip Line at the Adventure Center. At an elevation of 300 feet, riders reach speeds of up to 60 mph on the Pennsylvania’s longest zip line.

To be honest, I was terrified before I took a jump on the zip line. I was the only person over the age of 15 in line to ride. But once I took a leap, the rush was amazing and I loved the experience. I didn’t even scream!

After that adventure, I needed a break. And some ice cream. PJ’s retro style ice cream and pizza parlor fit the bill quite nicely. The best seats in the house are booths made to look like 1950s cars. Mmmm. One of my favorite flavors, Rocky Road.

Shopping is another fun activity at Nemacolin. The shops offer fun and unique items. I spied a cute pink skirt from Skirtin Around and some preppy tunics, too. But the coolest thing that I regret not purchasing was a pretty witch’s hat. (Yes, that’s right. Witch’s Hat. And yes, Halloween is already everywhere. In August.)

Even though I saw works from Botero and Toulouse-Lautrec at Nemacolin, this whimsical statue close to the Lodge is probably one of my favorites. The children look so happy. It makes me smile.

In fact, it’s pretty difficult not to smile at Nemacolin. Everyone who works at Nemacolin is incredibly friendly and polite. The service is stellar.

I’m eager to return for another visit! A trip to the spa and wine tasting are next on my Nemacolin wish list.

Wouldn’t it be a fun locale for a preppy girls’ weekend?

xoxo

  2. I actually live less than an hour from Nemacolin, and it is lovely...my favorite preppy getaway is Seven Springs, however, so next time you are in the area, give it a try!

  3. Zip-lining is on "my list" of things to do. But, I probably would have screamed. You looked so at ease up there. Thanks for sharing. Looks like you had a wonderful time.

  5. Oh my gosh, this post brings back memories!! I love Nemacolin!! Used to go there all the time with my family when I was younger. I even did a 'girls weekend' with my mom once and we spent almost the entire time at the Spa (not sure if they even still have a spa, but it used to be fabulous!)
