Fall Classics for Children

I adore classic children's clothing. Although it's especially appropriate for special occasions, I love to see nicely dressed children everywhere, from the playground to the theater.

Lately it’s been a little bit of a struggle to find clothes for the minnies to wear. So many children’s clothing lines stop at a size 10 or a size 12. Even the Lilly Pulitzer size 14 shift dresses are getting a little bit too short for my comfort level.  Have you ever tried to sit cross legged while wearing a skinny shift dress?  It's pretty impossible to do this, even if you're wearing leggings for modesty.

Buying clothes for a pre-teen is similar to walking a tight rope. On one side is the overly sparkly, fake rhinestone studded land of t-shirts with snarky sayings that are not appropriate for anyone and jeans with rises so low it is embarrassing. On the other side is clothing that looks perfectly acceptable to me, but might get an eye roll or two from the minnies.  Sadly, I think the days of pretty smocked dresses have ended with my girls.

Luckily, there are many options that we all love! Lately, I've been having great luck with stores like Zara, Lands End, Hartstrings, and Hanna Andersson for every day school and play clothing.  Dressier options at Brooks Brothers and Papo D'Anjo are perfect for the upcoming holidays.

The shirt dress from Zara is cute with little leggings and Uggs...

The adorable graphic tee from Lands' End has a real grosgrain bow and is a steal at less than $15!

Next Direct also offers good quality at affordable prices.

Where do you like to shop for your children?  At what age did your children stop wearing smocked clothing?

Shopping Guide

  1. OMG, this is going to be a really long road for you. I had to wear GAP Kids until I was a sophomore in high school.... Talk about awful.

The trick is just to try on things everywhere and when something fits, scoop it up.

  2. Sadly the days of smocked dresses are over for my daughter as well. She is 8 but very tall and athletic and wears a 10/12. She lives in lands end clothes and does brooks brothers for dressier options. It's a fine line indeed!

  3. Oh I'm so sorry they are growing up so fast. I love smocked anything for kids.
