The Perfect Outfit?

Have you ever had the perfect outfit...

Until you found the perfect hat...

Then you think that maybe the perfect hat might not work with the perfect dress. Luckily, Lilly Pulitzer releases the newest collection just in time for you to see what might be the new perfect dress...

What do you think? Which outfit do you like the best for next weekend's Virginia Gold Cup? I'll need to act quickly to pick up the dress in time for it to arrive for next weekend, so please take a minute to leave a comment and let me know which outfit you like the best. If you like the second outfit better, what color cardigan should I wear?

Friday Five

Happy Friday!  It's been an incredibly crazy and busy week here.  Juggling schedules, work, school, and play has been interesting this week to say the least.  Yesterday, I worked all day and then went into a whirlwind of an evening that included all of the following:  attending a children's Book Fair, attending the Science Fair at the minnies' school to hear them explain their science project, and socializing for a while at a retirement party on the opposite end of town.  After getting dinner on the run while picking up a few necessary things at Wegmans, the minnies finished their homework in the car just in time to make it to Irish Dance class.  I'm exhausted just writing about yesterday's blur of a day.

But as my girl Scarlett O'Hara says, "Tomorrow is another day."  And she's right.  It's a fresh new day and it's Friday!  Here are five things that are on my mind today.  I hope you enjoy them!

Have you noticed that auctions on Facebook seem to be the newest thing?  From jewelry to stationery, Facebook auctions are so popular.  Last night, I spied this monogrammed iPhone case from Trio Design Studio.  Isn't it adorably pink and green?

Kraft Fresh Take is the coolest new product!  Natalia had seen it advertised on television and she's usually pretty convincing when she sees an ad on TV, unless she's trying to get me to buy the Magic Bullet blender and mixer.  Anyhow, the Fresh Take mix comes in six different varieties including Southwest Three Cheese and Italian Parmesan.  We tried the Southwest Three Cheese and it was so good.  Seriously.  You have to try this.  It is fast and easy to prepare on even the busiest night and everyone will love it.  The baked chicken is crunchy and full of flavor; it even has a little kick to it.  Everyone gave it two thumbs up at home!

My Kid Would Never Do That, a Dateline special series, highlights behaviors in children and teens that are often difficult for the parents to watch.  The report has hidden cameras set up to test how children will react to certain situations.  The first week, I watched the show with my daughters and was practically in tears for part of the show.  The topic was Stranger Danger.  Children who knew better ended up getting into vehicles with complete strangers, accepting free ice cream from a fake "ice cream man", giving their home address and telephone numbers to strangers, and allowing themselves to be photographed by strangers.  It was incredibly eye opening and frightening to watch.

The show was a great topic to discuss with my girls and I am glad that they saw it.  Last week, the show didn't hit home as much because it dealt with texting while driving and teens.  This week's episode is another one that I think will be outstanding!

The topic:  Cheating.  If you have children of any age, it's worth watching this new and special series.

You all know about flash sales online, but you must visit One Kings Lane's sales today!  Two of my favorite preppy brands are featured today and the items are spectacular.  To sweeten the deal even more, if you're not already a member of One Kings Lane, join today using this link and you'll receive a $15 credit to purchase something fun!

The Preppy Plates sale includes ice buckets, platters, coasters, and napkins!  What a great way to start your summer.  I love this particular sale because you can specify your three letter monogram, not just your initial like I have seen elsewhere.

You can also see goodies from Jonathan Adler on One Kings Lane today.  His designs are so much fun.  Here's a preview of this sale that starts today at 11:00 a.m.

Kayce Hughes: The Sale's on Sale

Do you love Kayce Hughes' classic lines and whimsical prints?  Her classic, preppy clothes were some of the staples in my winter wardrobe this year.  I love the Brooke Corduroy Dress and have it in several colors.  The Karee dress' casual denim fabric is comfortable, yet refined.  You'll love these clothes!

So when I heard that Kayce Hughes was having a sale on their already fabulous prices, I knew that I had to find some goodies.  Sizes are fairly limited at these amazing prices, so act quickly for the best selection.

Here are some fabulous things that I found.  The Event Dress in blue pique is perfect for a party or a picnic.  I love pique!

The basic button down top in blue is a must have for any wardrobe.  I picked up one of these in white earlier in the season and love the crisp feel of the material.

The party skirt in red corduroy is fun!  The party skirt is kind of poufy and full and looks fantastic paired with a slim top.  The girls and I wore matching party skirts in a pink circle trim for a cousin's baby shower earlier this year.

Kayce Hughes started out her collection with her lovely creations for children.  My girls love their Kayce Hughes skirts, so I couldn't resist picking up a new skirt for them.  At $10, it's an easy choice!  The denim wrap skirt for girls will be an all season skirt; so versatile!

American Girl and the Ballet

"Mom, I think that I want to dress like my sister this time, not my doll."  - Alexia.

Recently, the minnies and I spent the most wonderful day at American Girl in Tysons Corner.  I saw a unique experience advertised on the American Girl website and knew that it was perfect for us.  After a wonderful lunch at the American Girl Cafe, we went to see Alice in Wonderland on a charter bus organized by the peeps at American Girl.

Our day started in the cafe for lunch.  The meal was delicious as always!  I'm always impressed at how pretty the food is.  I always say that I'm going to copy their fruit skewers and salad skewers...reminding myself to actually do this!  We started off with some pretzel bites with a honey mustard dipping sauce.  For the main course, we chose from several menus selections.

The American Girl dolls sit in special chairs.  The server brings a little tea cup for the dolls, too!  My girls and I especially like the table talkers that help generate a great lunch time conversation.

After lunch, we boarded the charter bus!  There were about 50 grandmothers, mothers, and girls who participated in this experience.

The goodie bags entertained everyone during the short bus ride to the Kennedy Center.  There was a cute how to book called Dazzling Desserts with fun cookie and party ideas.  An American Girl magazine, bottled water, and sweet treats were also included in the treat bag.

The brownie and sugar cookie combo was a huge hit!

Alice in Wonderland was outstanding!  The costumes and choreography were amazing and I particularly loved the effects and techniques used to make Alice look bigger and smaller.  It was such a beautiful day that we couldn't resist a break on the terrace during intermission.

Representatives from American Girl kept our group together and flawlessly organized this wonderful event.  It was an easy, fun, and unique way to experience American Girl and the ballet.  I have seen other events organized at the American Girl store such as visits to the Smithsonian and highly recommend these experiences.

What is the most special excursion you remember as a child?  xoxo

Fun Gifts for Mother's Day

We should give as we would receive, cheerfully, quickly, and without hesitation; for there is no grace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers. ~Seneca

It's no secret that I love gift giving! The best gifts to buy are the ones that are not required or expected. It's fun to show someone that you are thinking about them by giving them a special gift or small token.

Mother's Day is a perfect excuse to show your mother, grandmother, or friend that you love her. Gifts don't have to be extravagant and over the top; there are millions of free or inexpensive gifts to share with your favorite mother this year.

I've put together a list of my favorite inexpensive and unique gifts and hope that you find something that you love, too!

I have a secret love affair with tea towels and dish towels.  Luckily an efficient dishwasher eliminates the need to actually use the towels on a regular basis, but I love to hang dish towels in the kitchen and change them with the season or mood.  The Palm Beach Dish Towel is perfect for the Mommy who loves the Palm Beach lifestyle all year long.  The dish towel is also available for a dozen or so other cities, so be sure to see if your town is included.

Is your mother tech savvy?  My mother is a computer whiz and loves to listen to music.  Just last night, she was testing out my new iphone at the DAR meeting.  I think I see this preppy patterned Portable Speaker in her future!

A good book always is an excellent choice for a gift.  Star Spangled Manners is an interesting book that explores manners in a different way than a traditional book about manners.  This book presents a historical look at American Customs and Manners and details why we do the things we do.  It's a great choice for history lovers or those who appreciate good manners.  Thanks to my friend Leesa who discovered this book!  It's a must read.

Here's the gift that keeps on giving.  We're enjoying local organic vegetables straight from the farm already this spring and I was so excited when I saw the Lettuce Garden Mix.  This treat makes a lovely table centerpiece and includes delicious varieties of lettuce.  Simply cut the lettuce as you need it and more will grow to enjoy later.  I love the idea of fresh lettuce and am dreaming about a salad made with this lettuce.  If you don't live in the area, check out your local CSA or Farmer's Market for something like this.

What is the most unique and delightful gift that you have ever been given?

Outfits of the Day

Since Mother Nature can't decide if she wants summer to be here or not, we've been playing the jacket game this week.  It's fairly cool in the morning and I need a light jacket.  What a great excuse to pull the Whitney Coat from Elizabeth McKay out of the wardrobe.  Today is a fairly casual day, so I'm wearing my denim dress from Kayce Hughes with oodles of pearls from J. Crew and Sperry heels.

Lately Natalia has become quite the little fashionista. She has been putting together the cutest outfits and I'm pretty convinced that I'm jealous of her wardrobe. Here's the ensemble that she picked for yesterday.  The dress is from Brooks Brothers, the necklace from J. Crew, and jean jacket from Lilly Pulitzer.  You can't see her shoes, but they're super cute little orange leather sandals that look like McKims from Steve Madden.  And the plastic white sunglasses that she wears everywhere are from Target.

Minnie Paradise

If a paradise existed where both parents and children could enjoy themselves on vacation, then it would be at the Hyatt Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge, Maryland. This resort has everything that children love, without being an over the top Chuck E. Cheese-on-steroids-with-water-nightmare like another place that my children love way more than I do.

The indoor Winter Garden area is so much fun!  The large indoor pool is a huge hit with kids.  My minnies wanted to buy one of the inflatable toys from the towel hut that everyone seemed to have and I'm a sucker, so they got one.  A better solution for the next visit would be to buy an inflatable toy from a store across the road on Route 50 before arriving at the Hyatt.  We spent hours playing and swimming here.

The programming for children is incredibly well organized.  One day, they played an organized game of sharks and minnows, and on another day, children got free popsicles at the pool.  In the evening, everyone enjoys Dive-In Movies shown on the screen in the pool area.

The infinity pool offers a gorgeous view of the Choptank River.  There's an outdoor water slide in the heated pool.  The minnies loved the water slide and surprisingly, it was open and full of children when we were there!  According to the girls, the water in the outdoor pool was warmer than the water in the indoor pool.

Every day, the hotel prints a list of activities for the day. There were special activities every hour! Giant Jenga games, cooking demonstrations, temporary tattoos, roasting S'Mores by the fireplace, and Dive In Movies were some of the girls’ favorites.  My girls are no longer thrilled by a moon bounce, but the tinier children loved it!

Another hit with my crew was cookie decorating in the afternoon. I was extremely impressed with the hotel staff’s organization. For the cookie decorating, the adorable crab cookies were pre-plated with a dollop of icing and a plastic knife to spread the sweet icing. Chocolate sprinkles, candy, nuts, and other toppings lined a table where children decorated their cookies. In every activity we attended, the staff was obviously prepared and well trained to work with children.

The spring weather was also perfect to spend time outdoors!  We played miniature golf and tried frisbee golf at the hotel and explored the edge of the water.

We even saw a few fish around the marina, too.

Once we arrived at the hotel, we didn't leave the property until our departure.  The hotel has many dining options and there is an area where families can eat food from inside or outside of the hotel.  There's take out pizza and a cafe with Starbucks coffee and ice cream.  The food prices were reasonable and we ate all of our meals on site.

The Hyatt Chesapeake Bay is a fantastic option for a quick getaway weekend from Baltimore or Washington, D.C. It's an easy drive and is a nice change of pace from city life. Your kids will thank you for this trip! If you're looking for a romantic getaway, this is probably not the place for you since it really seems to be perfectly suited for families.

We're already planning a return trip!

Dressing for the Gold Cup

Deciding what to wear to a steeplechase takes careful thought and consideration.  Events such as the Carolina Cup, the Kentucky Derby, and Preakness are many things to many people; and are always much more than the equestrian events.

Whether you attend the events to tailgate, socialize, or actually watch the horses, what you wear is very important.  This year I'm going to the Virginia Gold Cup and am so excited.

Top Gold Cup Fashion Tips:
1.  Wedge shoes:  Although heels look great, they're a terrible idea for this kind of event.  Your feet will sink into the green grass at the Great Meadow.  Wedge heels are a great alternative.  Flats and sandals can be cute but remember that there can be mud and lots of dirt.  You don't want your feet to be filthy before lunch!  Watch the weather and bring a pair of wellies if needed.

2.  Hat and Sunglasses:  Choose a fun hat that reflects your personality, but don't go overboard!  Even with a hat, you'll still need sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun.  Plus, it's always nice to have that hidden celebrity in disguise look.  People will wonder who you are!

3.  Dress:  Whether you're setting up your own little picnic in the lawn, have a rail side tailgate, or are in a VIP tent on Members Hill, the Gold Cup is an upscale event.  Wear your prettiest, preppiest spring dress.  Lilly Pulitzer and Elizabeth McKay have some great options this spring.  Although afternoon temperatures can get quite warm, especially in the tents, it's a good idea to bring a lightweight cotton cardigan for the morning.

4.  Bag:  Of course, you'll bring your phone and keys, but be sure to pack some unlikely suspects in your bag for the Gold Cup.  You know how I mentioned that the Gold Cup is upscale?  Well, upscale still means that you'll be using the porta potty, even in the VIP area.  It's a good idea to bring some extra TP.  Not very elegant for me to mention, but important.  You'll also want to bring some sunscreen with you.  Every year, I see people who have had way too much sun and way too much to drink.  That's never a good combination.

Here's what I'll be wearing to this year's Gold Cup!

Dress, hat, cardigan, shoes

Have you ever been to the Carolina Cup, the Virginia Gold Cup, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, or a similar event?  What did you wear?

I'd love to feature reader outfits from different events in an upcoming blog post.  Please send me your favorite picture from a steeplechase or horse race and you could be featured later this month!

Win an Elizabeth McKay Wardrobe

Does your spring wardrobe need a little boost?  If the answer is yes, then you're going to love the news I have to share with you.  One lucky person will win a $2,500 wardrobe from Elizabeth McKay in the Wear It and Pair It Photo Contest.

To enter to win, visit the contest page on Facebook and upload your original photo.  You can read the rules for participation here.

If you post a picture, please let me know; I'd love to vote for you!

In the picture, I'm wearing the Nephew Tunic with green embroidery and the Christie Coat in black. The coolest part of the coat is that it has quilted elephants on it! Here's a better look at the tunic.
