Bermuda Bags

Thinking of Spring: Lilly Pulitzer

Spring will soon be here!  Even though January and February are some of the coldest winter months, I love to cross off the days as a countdown to spring and summer.  Every day means a little bit more sunlight and a promise of warmer weather.

Lilly Pulitzer just released their spring collection and it is a winner!  Later this week I'll give you a fit guide to let you know how the sizes are running since that was a very popular post for the last resort delivery.  I am loving the a-line silhouettes and luxe fabrics that scream resort chic!

The Briella dress in Flutter Blue Chin Chin Stripe is figure flattering in a Posh Ponte knit that won't wrinkle or rumple.  You'll look perfectly polished all day in this comfortable dress.

100's of Tags and Catalogs

Do you save the hang tags from your clothing?  I do!  In fact, I have cataloged so much of my wardrobe on a spreadsheet with prices along with the style and print name.  It's helpful for me to keep an inventory of what I have and actually is a good way to keep my spending in line.  After a Lilly Pulitzer warehouse sale, I discovered that I had purchased duplicate items that were still new with tags in the closet.  Oooops.  Time to start a spreadsheet.

One year when my girls were in elementary school, they had to bring in 100 pieces of something to celebrate the 100th day of school.  Both girls immediately suggested that they bring 100 Lilly hang tags to school with them.  I can only imagine what their teacher thought!  And luckily for my girls, I had 100 of the older white Lilly Pulitzer tags with the palm tree logo as well as 100 of the newer pink and green tags.

In addition to the hang tags, I also save Lilly Pulitzer catalogs from season to season.  They're great resources for print and style names.  Whenever I want to remember the name of a print or find out when a particular item was sold, I simply consult the catalog.

The catalog photography is gorgeous and provides so much inspiration.  I have the Kiera dress pictured on the cover of the catalog and love the background wall of peonies behind the model.  The gorgeous white against the pink flowers inspired an idea for my wedding!

My favorite catalogs are from the 50th Year Jubilee celebration.  I particularly love the Retrospective book with vintage photos and stories about Lilly Pulitzer.  Here's one of my favorite pictures of Lilly in her original Palm Beach shop.

Palm Beach Chic Decor

As I brave the below freezing temperatures in Maryland this week, I dream of Palm Beach.  Palm Beach is beautiful, fascinating, and oh-so-chic.  Lilly Pulitzer embodies chic resort style with iconic colorful prints that brighten any day.  Slim Aarons captured Palm Beach chic on film.  Why not brighten your home decor with a little bit of nautical and beach inspired find?

This weekend, I found some chic treasures in Z Gallerie.  At the top of my list is this pair of coral pillar holders.  The rich gold tone is elegant, making these candle sticks an excellent choice for a centerpiece.

The whelk shell and starfish, made of resin and finished in electroplated silver metallic, are adorable on a coffee table or to add interest on a bookshelf.

The openwork starfish bowl is whimsical and fun!  I picked up one of these to display on the candy buffet table at my wedding.  I'm thinking about putting little bags of cotton candy in it.

Must Read Book for Tweens from American Girl

In mid-February 2013, American Girl will introduce The Care and Keeping of You 2:  The Body Book for Older Girls- the follow up to its bestselling advice book.  Written by board certified pediatrician Cara Natterson, M.D., the new guide focuses on the physical and emotional changes girls ages 10 and up face during puberty.

If you're my age, you probably remember reading Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret as a young girl.  To this day, that book still resonates with me.  I think that I must have read that book a dozen or more times.  Oh how I would have loved to have had a factual, non-fiction book with real information about what was happening at that time!  Luckily, our daughters can read a classic and a new book to help them navigate the pre-teen  years.

My friends at American Girl sent a preview copy of the book to the minnies and me.  From one mom to another, I have to tell you that this book is a winner for girls ages 10 and up.  The girls loved the first book and are already enjoying this newest update.  Given the ever present pressures and influences placed on growing girls today, this book is a valuable resource to give them the tools and tackle their questions and concerns about their changing bodies.

The book encourages conversation between girls and their mothers and guides girls on how to talk to their parents or other trusted adults about their questions and worries about growing up.  Throughout the book, factual information is presented to girls in an easy to understand format.  Parents looking for additional information and conversation starters to help them talk to their daughters about the topics raised in the book can visit American Girl's website, where they'll find an author interview with Dr. Natterson.

Wedding Color Picks

Recently, many of you gave me your feedback about color choices for the wedding.  The overwhelming majority of readers voted for pink and blue.  I have to admit that for this occasion, pink and blue was my favorite choice, too!  Although I adore a pink and green combination, I recently used it for the minnies' First Communion celebration.

We're already well on our way to creating the palette for this wedding color story.  The color story for this special day includes Navy Blue, Matisse Blue, Hot Pink, and Silver.  I've been a busy bee and have already booked so many vendors!

My two attendants are going to wear the Louisa dress from J. Crew in Matisse Blue silk chiffon.  The plan is to pair the dress with silver shoes and jewelry.

Who needs to rent linens when you can make beautiful table toppers at home?  Lilly Pulitzer Fallin in Love comforter covers from Garnet Hill will be transformed into beautiful table toppers, piped with bright pink trim by my mother and her fabulous sewing skills.

Peonies are in bloom in June.  The large, fragrant buds are dramatic and colorful as a bright contrast to the shades of blue.  I love the idea of a large bouquet of peonies without any filler!

Nautical touches and details will round out the color story while a candy buffet delights the sweet tooth of guests of all ages.  More details to follow!

New York Hotel Rooms for Families

I can’t open my suitcase! This was the phrase of my birthday weekend in New York last summer. Although we stayed in a well-known Midtown Manhattan luxury hotel, the room was so small that I actually laughed out loud when I opened the door and saw the accommodations.  Quite literally, I didn't even have space to fully open my suitcase in the room unless I put it on the bed.

Hotel rooms in New York City are notoriously small. I know that space is a premium in the big city. But I knew that I didn’t want to repeat a long weekend in a shoebox, especially with the minnies in tow on this occasion, I started to investigate options for a suite.

There are many suite and tower options in New York, but the prices of some of those rooms during Christmas would severely limit my shopping budget, so I kept looking for the right room.

And wow, did I strike hotel suite gold!

The Barclay Intercontinental is a gorgeous hotel that is just across the street from the Waldorf Astoria. The facilities are gorgeous and the lobby looked spectacular.

When we got to the room, I was truly amazed. We had a three room suite. In New York City.  At a price that was substantially lower than other tower rooms I had investigated.

The suite actually consisted of two separate rooms, a standard hotel room, and a suite. The master suite had a king sized bed and luxury bathroom, complete with amenities from Gilchrest and Soames, bathrobes, and slippers. The separate living room area was spacious with a couch, sitting area, desk, and television. The second bedroom had another king bed and separate bathroom. Amazing. This configuration is ideal for large families traveling to New York who want ample space for everyone in the party.

The minnies enjoy room service in the living room! Such a fun treat. Natalia said that she felt like Eloise!!

The hotel is a comfortable walking distance from Times Square and Rockefeller Center!  Where do you like to stay in New York?

Valentine's Day Party Picks: Minnies Edition

I always wear something special for Valentine's Day.  Whether it's pink, red, or covered with hearts, I cannot remember a year that I have not worn a little pretty for this special day.  My mom was such a fun mom when I was little and always had something fun for my sister and me to or red on Valentine's Day, green on St. Patrick's Day, and red, white, and blue for patriotic holidays.

Even before the minnies were born, I knew that I would be a mom who would delight in finding adorable holiday outfits for them to wear!  I have to secretly admit that I was thrilled when I found out that I was going to have girls because my thoughts immediately turned to bows, smocked dressed from France and Spain, and all things pink!

Natalia and Alexia are wearing white organza smocked dresses in their first passport pictures, taken at one month of age.  Over the top, perhaps, but the dress was a gift and I they had to wear it somewhere, right?

Valentine's Day is a whirlwind of school parties, exchanging valentines with classmates, and lots of fun.  I'm doubting that the girls will have an official party this year, but they're already working on their wardrobe choices for the special day and have chosen their valentines from Tiny Prints.

Hearts are always a fabulous choice for Valentine's Day!  Add some tulle,  make it pink, and it's a winning choice.  Little girls will love this Heart shaped tulle skirt from Gap.  Pair it with a monogrammed or personalized t-shirt and she'll be comfortable and adorable at her school party.

Older and younger will appreciate Kayce Hughes' Margret Blouse in the Red Bow print.  The pretty red and white print is whimsical and fun.  The shirt is incredibly versatile and looks great with jeans or a skirt.  You can wear this throughout the season without it screaming, "This is my Valentine's Day shirt!"

Since your little minnie will be doing a lot of other activities on Valentine's Day besides the party, comfort is important.  Bright pink paired with polka dotted tights is so pretty!  The Samantha Dress from Olive Juice transitions from playground to party and is easy to wear.  Olive Juice's clothing is such high quality and can survive almost any elementary school mishap, even a painting accident!  Oops!

Although my minnies are excited to dress for Valentine's Day, they're well beyond pink tulle skirts and other options that they used to love.  Natalia saw the pink tulle skirt when she peeked over my shoulder and said in a sweet, high pitched voice, "OH, Mommy.  That skirt is soooooo cute for a little girl for Valentine's Day.  We TOTALLY would have worn that."  Emphasis on would have.

So what's a tween Mommy to do?  Luckily, there are lots of choices that make mommies and tween minnies happy.  This heart dress and tights from Benetton is edgy and fashion forward for the tween set without being babyish or silly.

Crewcuts is another great choice for little ones as well as tweens.  The Long sleeve stripe sequin heart tee from J. Crew is perfect with jeans or a skirt and comes in many colors and styles.

Second Wedding Dress

We've set a date for our wedding!  Plans are moving very quickly since our wedding will take place in less than 6 months.  Every woman dreams of the perfect wedding dress.  Bridal magazines, pinterest, and online sources offer so much fun inspiration and eye candy that it can be difficult to make a choice.

Luckily for me, etiquette and rules are somewhat relaxed regarding dresses for a second wedding and pretty much anything goes now in 2013.  Obviously a second time bride probably wouldn't want a long veil and train on a dress, but other than that, the choices are endless.

Whenever I'm considering a big decision, I think in the back of my mind, WWJD or WWDD.  What Would Jackie Do or What Would Diana Do?  For Jackie's nuptials with Aristotle Onassis, she wore a lace covered dress from Valentino.  The dress reflects Jackie's elegant style while being appropriate to the event and her age.  Instead of a lavish wedding ceremony for 700 people, Jackie chose a small ceremony on a yacht for her second wedding.

I have to think that if Diana had lived to marry Dodi Al Fayed, she would have chosen a similar dress and would have had an elegant, intimate second wedding.

I'm following Jackie's lead with the planning of our summer wedding.  I'm choosing a dress that is appropriate for the venue of our small ceremony and reception, while celebrating my unique style, age, and attitude.

Natalia thinks that I should get this dress from J. Crew because the one shoulder model shares her name.  I think that it would be a beautiful choice to wear to our menu tasting or rehearsal.

For the ceremony, I'm leaning towards a long dress in ivory with a little bit of coverage and a simple silhouette.  Here's one of the choices currently on the short list!  It's the Rier wedding gown from Aire Barcelona.

I'm going to wear a flower or simple detail in my hair instead of a veil.  The halter top of J. Crew's Adalaide wedding gown is stunning.
