Issa for Banana Republic

While the world celebrates to welcome His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge, Banana Republic is ready to launch another fabulous collaboration.  Their recent collection from Milly was wildly popular and my favorite elephant shorts sold out instantly.

I have a feeling that Issa for Banana Republic will follow suit.

Issa became a household name when Catherine wore the iconic blue dress to announce her engagement to Prince William in 2010.  Now everyone can have access to this fabulous style, at a much prettier price point

The collection will include wrap dresses, cardigans, tops, and more.  The dresses will retail for around $100 and will be available in stores and online on August 8th.  But you'll need to act quickly.  I predict that things will sell out immediately.

Wooden Monogram Cutouts

Wooden Monograms are so pretty and can be used in so many ways.  When I received my large wooden monogram in the mail from my friends at Southern Nest, I was immediately amazed by the careful packaging.  The monogram was in a box with lots of filler and was carefully attached on  a piece of sturdy cardboard.

If you are looking for a wooden monogram, Southern Nest is THE SOURCE for high quality wooden monogram cutouts.  Their philosophy is a little bit vintage and a little bit preppy; just my kind of style.

The wooden monogram cutout is so versatile and can be used and displayed in so many different ways.  Today, as I celebrate my 1 month wedding anniversary, it's fun to look at this casual picture of us cutting the cake.  My new monogram added an elegant touch to the cake table.

Now that we're getting organized in our new home, the monogram adds an elegant touch to the home d├ęcor.  Although I had originally planned to hang the monogram on the wall in the piano room, I opted to add it to the wreath on the front door because I would see it every day!

Southern Nest's wooden monograms make fabulous gifts for new brides, college students, or any special occasion.  My minnies want to hang one in their room!

Where would you hang your wooden monogram cutout in your home?

Birthdays...Post Children

Last weekend I celebrated my birthday!  It was a wonderful day full of fun.  When I was younger, I lived for birthdays.  I would plan my wish list for months and was always so excited about the party.

Landmark birthdays were especially exciting.  I remember the double digits cake my mother made for my 10th birthday.  Ages 16, 18 and 21 were also a thrill.  But after that, birthdays somehow became less important in my own eyes.

One of the things that changed my opinion of my own birthday was having children.  I'll spend months planning their birthday party and finding the perfect birthday gift for them.  Hours and hours spent on Pinterest and other party planning sites are well worth the smiles my girls have on their faces while they are celebrating their birthday.

No matter whose birthday it is, in my family, it is about the children.  When the minnies were 4 or 5, they would always joke with their Uncle Mike that it was his birthday whenever anyone else was celebrating.  It made them laugh and laugh.  As a result, we were all laughing.  Their joy and happiness was contagious.  And it still is.   Every holiday seems to change with children.  It's a happy change!

Lately, I don't give much thought to my own birthday.  Of course, I'd love to receive a floral printed shopping bag from Lilly, filled to the brim with new clothing.  A purse in a certain brown bag, from the Epi collection, makes me smile just thinking about it.  But the gifts don't make a birthday special.

Beautiful cards that I received mean so much to me.  Phone calls from people who sang Happy Birthday to me are fun, too.  Even Facebook is a fun venue for birthday girls.  Where else could I receive greetings and quick messages from old college friends I have not seen in years?

This year, the 11 year old not-so-minnie-anymore-minnies and my sweet husband planned my day.  They decided that we should go to see Despicable Me 2 in the morning.  The movie was hilarious and I have a mad crush on all of the minions.

The girls treated me to my favorite cake, Red Velvet!  They sang Happy Birthday to me so loudly and were thrilled to see me blow out the candles.

Finally, John and I enjoyed dinner at Volt!  I donned my Marie Kate dress from Lilly Pulitzer for the first time and am in love with this dress.  Dinner was an amazing experience.  We each enjoyed 5 courses of the most unique and delicious food I've ever tried.  The service was impeccable and I'm glad that J was able to get a reservation.

Birthdays, holidays and celebrations are about the children in my life now.  If you have children, have the celebrations in your life changed?  If you're over the milestone birthdays of 16, 18 and 21, have your ideas about birthdays changed?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Lilly Pulitzer Summer Sale

Shop at your favorite Lilly Pulitzer Corporate store for some deals and steals on things that you can wear right now.  Yesterday I visited my friends at Lilly Pulitzer Tysons Galleria and was delighted with what I found.  Almost the entire back section of the store is on sale along with a rolling rack of clothing in the entrance.  The selection is good and I found a variety of sizes for women and minnies.

The Poppy top is always a favorite, but these new colors are a late addition to the collection.  I think that the Lilly Corporate peeps decided to make some extra tops and recut the style when they saw how popular the original was.  The best part of all?  This top is on sale.

Everything from shorts, tops, polos, and tees are on sale.  With lots of Marie Kate dresses, beach pants, and popover tops, the selection is very good.

But my favorite find was in the shoe department.

McKim Sandals are a steal at $39.  Flutter Blue matches everything!

The Kat Kitten Heels are another fabulous find at only $69.  Choose from Flutter Blue, New Green, or Nude.

The sale is amazing, but a Gift With Purchase makes the deal even sweeter.  Spend $250 and you'll receive a Clutch in Cosmo Pink Mini Party Favors.

Independence Day at Mount Vernon

Food, family, and fireworks.  Independence Day is a fun holiday that is full of tradition.  This year, we decided to do something different to celebrate the 4th of July.  We went to Mount Vernon for their American Celebration.

Early in the day, we listened to a reading of the Declaration of Independence as we watched the troops in action on the Bowling Green.

The costumes and music were outstanding!

The girls enjoyed chatting with people who shared their perspective on the celebration, including General George Washington himself!  When he saw Alexia's retainer, Washington remarked that we must be very wealthy because she had "jewelry" on her teeth.  The interpreters never broke character and acted as if they truly hopped right out of a time machine.

One spectacular and unique event of the day were the day time fireworks display over the Potomac River.  Cannons sounded as General and Lady Washington welcomed guests at this fun presentation.

After the fireworks, we all enjoyed a piece (or two!) of Happy Birthday, America cake on the Bowling Green.

The amazing day was complete with a tour of the home and other out buildings.  Be sure to visit the Museum and Education Center while you're there.  The Revolutionary War Theater, with fog and rumbling seats, was our favorite experience.  Buy tickets in advance online to assure availability of your preferred tour time.

Sperrys Lost Their Sparkle

Alexia loves her Sperrys, but I had noticed that she had not been wearing her silver glitter boat shoes lately.  When I asked her about it, she said that they were "ruined" because the glitter was falling off the shoes little by little.

Never fear, Alexia, your DIY Mom is here!

We went to Joanns to get some Mod Podge and extra fine silver glitter.  I chose the gloss finish for the Mod Podge because I thought it would work well with the glitter.

Here are the poor Sperry Top Sider boat shoes before the re-glittering.  The original glitter and sparkle are worn and tired looking.

The process to make sparkle shoes is easy!  First, use a brush to apply an even coat of Mod Podge on the shoes.

Sprinkle glitter on the shoes and shake off the excess.  I let the first coat dry for an hour.  Then I repeated the process with another coat of Mod Podge and more glitter.  Finally, I finished with a top coat of Mod Podge.

The final result looks amazing and is better than new!
