Pink Sunday: My #LillyforTarget Shopping Experience

Pink Sunday: My #LillyforTarget Shopping Experience

Black Friday is for amateurs. Lilly Warehouse sales are tame. After my whirlwind experience of the past 24 hours and the Lilly for Target collaboration launch online and in store, I realize three things. I really love my Lilly, the thrill of the chase is pretty exciting, even if it is a rough ride, and there are some lovely Lilly lovers out there.

I set my alarm for midnight and woke up on cue. I felt like a child on Christmas Eve, the excitement was palpable. At first, it seemed that the collection had not been released online. Then, I learned that there were backdoor links to find the items. Using two computers, multiple browsers, and my phone, I attempted to shop from midnight until well after 1 a.m. without any success. As soon as I added an item to my cart, it disappeared or my cart froze during the checkout process.

I amused myself by reading the tweets for #LillyforTarget and messaging with friends who were also awake and trying to shop. After a steady intake of Diet Coke and pure energy flowing through my brain, sleep was out of the question. Meanwhile, at 4:30 a.m., despite my so-called savvy internet skills, multiple devices, and diligence, I still had not been able to check out or buy anything at all from the collection.

Luckily, I planned to go to my local Target. Natalia and Alexia eagerly awaited their morning wake up call a la Mommy, and we arrived at the store at 6:30 a.m. I was the first person in line! We set up camp and braved the chilly, windy morning. Armed with some iced tea and a croissant, I looked forward to the next segment of this adventure. So many lovely ladies stood in line with us and I enjoyed chatting with them about our love of Lilly. Some of my friends also arrived to join the party in line.

By the time the security guard and a Target employee came to speak to us, the colorful throng of Lilly lovers had grown to over 100 people. Just before the 8 a.m. store opening, the employee gave the following instructions, "Ladies. I want you to remember. This is Target. Lilly Pulitzer for Target. Not Wal-Mart. Please walk in an orderly manner."

The next ten minutes are a bit of a blur. We entered the store through a single door and the games officially began. Natalia and Alexia picked out their clothing while I made a beeline for the only thing on my wish list, the strapless maxi dress in Nosie Posey. Next, we headed to the home department where we met up with Pam for an exchange of Lilly. She picked up a pair of the pineapple sandals for me and I had a lace tank top for her. I even found a dress for my neighbor and a toddler cover up for blogger Erin's little girl.

The home department was packed to the gills with people and some boxes still sat unopened on large, flat carts. The Lilly lovers opened those boxes immediately and helped themselves to plates, tea cups, wine charms and more. The girls and I also successfully picked up our wish list items here, too. To be honest, although the group of mostly women behaved respectfully, the volume of crowd surrounding small displays was a bit overwhelming and the feeling today was one that I have never felt on the busiest time at a Warehouse Sale.

Incredulously, I noted that it was only 8:10 a.m. on my phone. In only 10 minutes, we had shopped and paid for our items.

Meanwhile, empty displays in every department were the only reminder that anything had ever happened at this Target store.

At home, I enthusiastically opened my new treasures with time to spare before heading to church. I'm thrilled to report that the quality of the shift dresses and maxi dress that I bought equals that of Lilly Pulitzer from corporate stores. Details like textured fabric, lace trim, and a pineapple zipper pulls beautifully embellish these dresses. Only the Lilly lace hem and bra strap loop are absent from the design. The substantial fabric of the strapless maxi dress seems thicker than some Marlisa maxi dresses that I already have from last year. Overall, I'm pleased with the quality and wonderful price point of the collection. I also love the retro-style prints that remind me of so many older prints.

  2. Good for you! Unfortunately my daughter didn't have the same kind of experience and came home empty handed. She said the people around her were just grabbing armfuls and throwing it in carts and checking out. I think the shelves were empty by 8:07! Crazy!

  3. Mine was not as pleasing either. Disappointed at sold out everything online and that I could not order home online which is what I had wanted most. Stuff disappeared out of my cart too. Surprisingly I did manage to order 3 pieces for each of my little girls online. They look super cute. I was also sad no baby shifts or bubbles. I went to the store after church and it was like it never happened. The displays were down rack gone and the regular clothes already in their place. On my phone texting a fellow Lilly lover while there too. Luckily for her, her Lilly loving mom went early and got her a bunch of goodies fighting the crowds. She even got the coveted hammock! As I was leaving I small a sad rack in the girls dept and it had 5 pieces left all between 2t-5t. I bought every piece and 3 of them work for my lucky girls 2 boom boom jumpsuits that are too cute and soft and the little one got an embroidered shirt too that is so pretty but runs small. Now I have a 3t boom boom and a 4t embroidered shirt that I will not put on ebay but will offer to anyone who may need them at cost plus shipping so their little Lilly lovers can enjoy. If not I will return them and maybe someone else will return other sizes I need. Maybe even something for me.

Glad you got your goodies they are beautiful and will be so nice for summer!!

  5. My experience was much like yours, Bethany. I was up all night trying to get through on the computer to no avail. We were 10th in line and while Gretchen headed to clothes to get what we wanted there, I headed to accessories and came away with quite a lot of bags and scarves. We regrouped and sorted our items and after choosing what we wanted to keep, we gave away six or seven items we decided we didn't need to late stragglers (at 8:05!) who didn't get anything. We then went to home goods...There were still a lot of items left but I got the last giraffe bottle opener which I really wanted...It's just too whimsical! The one item I really wanted and didn't get in store was a beach towel but I am still searching. The most disappointing part of this entire experience was the fact that all of the plus sizes were online and I was so hoping for the shorter dresses in Boom Boom and Nosey Posey but I'm not giving up hope. There will be returns and I am going to keep checking back early and often. Also, the manager told us that a lot of home items would be replenished. I'm still tired and on the hunt but this has been a fun experience. Now I'm off to the Lilly store to check out the new summer items...I've already got my eye on a few things...;)

  7. I was third in line so I had, like you had the pick of all the items that were there. There were only 5 of us in line before opening.northern Ca. isnt really a hot spot for Lilly. Our store had a very small selection and very few prints. I was sad that our store didn't carry any shoes, bathing suits or jewelry.

  8. Do any of you Lilly lovers know the hot pink paint color used in all Lilly Pulitzer stores behind the checkout counter? I would appreciate your help! Thanks.

    1. Hi Joanne! I don't know the paint color name, but I'm going to a store this weekend and will ask about it. Wouldn't it be a fabulous color for a home office?

  9. It sounds like you had a much more civil experience! I was able to get everything I wanted except for the mugs and the turban headwrap online, but in store, I was only able to get the weekender bag. The DC Target was complete mayhem, people decided that the line wasn't going to be enforced once we got in, so they just crowded at the door and then I have never seen women behave so badly. I thought items were going to be ripped as women tried to grab things from each other and a Target employee was almost pushed over as she tried to put a few more things out. And, of course, there were those women with carts full of 5 of the same scarf, three of the same dress, and all their other goods waiting to be listed on ebay...

  10. How wonderful you were able to obtain some of the items.
I knew that Lilly was going to Target. I tried online--wasn't happening with anything that I wanted.
So my husband and I went to the store (about 2 miles away). We got there and there was nothing left. Oh well what am I going to do? I had bruised and cracked some ribs three days earlier so I guess I wasn't in the shopping mood.

  11. Hey Bethany (and other local readers)- there's a great facebook group for buy/sell/trades in the DMV area if anyone is interested in scoring some more items! Lots of people have been posting returns they find at local Targets too. The group is Lilly for Target - BST for DC/MD/VA
