Annapolis Visit

Recently the girls and I visited Annapolis, Maryland. Our day trip offered a delightful glimpse at 4 centuries worth of rich history. We explored the city by foot, logging over 15,000 steps in the day. I love the beautiful houses in the residential area of downtown Annapolis.

I hope to find a pineapple decoration like this one for my house.

After a guided visit to the State House and the Naval Academy, we visited the Paca House and Gardens. If you visit Annapolis, I highly recommend a visit to all of these places. We're taking a break from the sun in the beautiful gardens at the Paca House.

My friend Wendy recommended the Iron Rooster and I am so glad that she did! Instead of bread or rolls, we began our meal with BACON. So delicious. The chicken and biscuits tasted like heaven and the salads are huge.

As a special treat, we ended our delicious meal with a home made pop tart. It was pure heaven.

Back to School x 3

We're starting to get into a routine at Casa Pink and Green after a whirlwind week of preparation for back to school and two fabulous first days. Meetings, training, and planning filled last week to the brim, although I carved out some time to put the finishing touches on my classroom. I used a Lilly Pulitzer Garnet Hill fabric shower curtain to cover my desk and added a tassel garland that Alexia made. I love the final result.

For the first day of school, I chose a knit Janice dress, a perfect choice that didn't wrinkle and looked great all day.

Natalia and Alexia started high school this year! It's so nice that they attend the same school where I teach, so that I see them during the day. They're keeping busy with clubs and as a part of the poms team. I'm looking forward to the first football game in a few weeks. Both girls decided to wear Lilly for their first day of school.

In addition to teaching full time, I'm also taking a class this fall, so things will be quite busy. So far, my week paints a preview of what looks to be a fantastic semester. Right now, I'm teaching Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Advanced Studies, and AP Literature. Whew! Here's the Lilly Pulitzer Marlowe dress that I wore on day 2.

I love to use technology with my students, to learn Spanish in a different way. Yesterday, students used QR codes to read paragraphs that their classmates had written about a person or character. The activity helped them to practice writing and reading while moving around the room (and the hallway!) using their phones.

How to Shop the After Party Sale

Good morning! While you're waiting for the official sale to start at Lilly Pulitzer, prepare with some tips and get some shopping done before everyone else.

Shop now at Amazon and beat the rush! Amazon offers an amazing selection of Lilly at about 50% off retail. I spotted a Scuba to Cuba Skipper Popover for $62 and fast, free shipping. Shop right now for dozens of items that might be on your list.

The Annabelle Shift Dress is another fantastic pick at 50% off the original price.

The Cathy Shift in Skye Blue Heaven was at the top of my list. See all of the Lilly Pulitzer sale items on Amazon here.

Mark your calendar and set your alarm to be ready to shop Lilly Pulitzer’s sale this morning. In order to help you complete your Lilly shopping wish list, I have some tips to help you shop the sale. Even if you're familiar with the sale or have read my tips for previous sales, I have a quick update for you.

Here’s the scoop. Your first step to get ready for the After Party Sale is to create an account or make sure that your account is up to date.  By creating your account in advance, you’ll be ready to check-out easily and quickly. Speed is the key during this 2-day sale. The one who clicks fastest buys the dress!

Things are not held in your shopping cart during the sale. I’ve had things jump out of my cart while I was shopping. It’s true!

Decide which items are at the top of your list and shop for those first. Complete the check-out process quickly. Don’t worry about having multiple orders; it’s better to check-out early and often to ensure that you get what you want since Lilly Pulitzer has free shipping during the sale. This year, you'll be put back in "virtual line" after each order. I recommend that you use multiple devices to shop.

After clothing, I usually find my favorite things in the accessories category. In previous years, I’ve been able to pick up great birthday gifts and little treats as well as some specialty items like tablecloths. Many previous gift with purchase items are also available; a great perk of the sale, especially since we all can’t usually spring $1,000 for the GWP when it is offered. I expect that there will be a good amount of sorority items like scarves and dry erase boards. There might even be a gift with purchase this year.

The After Party Sale offers an opportunity to pick up some Lilly Pulitzer at a great price. Although the majority of the items are probably best suited for warm weather, there are many ways to wear your Lilly in the fall. I add cardigans, tights, and boots to my favorite dresses so that I can wear them even on a cold day. Now that both of my girls are officially wearing women’s sizes, I plan to buy lots of shorts and skirts for them.

Although some items will sell out quickly, don’t worry if you are at work or school on Monday morning. The sale lasts for two days and it seems like new things appear for sale periodically throughout the event. Believe me, you’ll be able to find some great goodies and the prices are truly unbelievable. This year, Lilly Pulitzer stores will offer the online sale prices for merchandise that they have in stock at the store. If you have a corporate store close to you, it might be worth a trip to see what they have. I've also had fantastic luck at Signature Stores.

Remember to check out the selection at 6pm.com and Zappos, too.

Tory Burch Private Sale Picks

Tory Burch has a Private Sale online right now. In some cases, prices drop up to 70% off the original retail. I like to stock up on basics like flats and cardigans. Some of the accessories and jewelry make excellent holiday gift ideas.

Here are some of my favorite items:

The Simone Cardigan is a wardrobe staple to wear all year long. The Habanero Pepper color makes a perfect choice for fall.

Add a bag to your collection at a fantastic price. The Robinson Open Dome Satchel in black matches everything and can be carried. Whenever I look at the cost of a bag or higher ticket item, I consider the cost per use, not the total cost. If this is something that you will use every day, it will not be that expensive.

Shop now for holiday gifts. It's the perfect time to avoid the panic and rush of regular holiday shopping. Many items are on sale with fabulous prices, like these Adeline Stud Earrings.

How to Organize An Agenda + 8 Fab Agendas

Although most traditional calendars begin in January, I prefer to use an agenda that starts at the beginning of a new school year. Stay organized and be successful this year at school by using an academic planner.

With busy schedules and lots of activities, my girls and I use our agendas to keep track of everything. This year, we have all opted for an agenda from Lilly Pulitzer. I chose the jumbo size so that I can include details such as meetings, addresses, and other plans in a larger space. From year to year, I save my agenda because it is a fantastic record of everything that we have done.

kate spade agenda lilly pulitzer agenda bando agenda preppy agenda

Since I manage the schedules of several people, I color code items in my agenda for each person so I know who is doing which activity. My girls use a color coding system with a different color for school activities like homework, poms practices and games, social appointments, and church/volunteer activities. By looking at the agenda, it's instantly obvious what activities are happening.

I use the month at a glance page for important dates to remember with appointments and special days, while the weekly/daily pages of the agenda offer more space to record details about each day.

The best way to stay on top of things in your schedule is to write things down as soon as you hear about them. I take my agenda everywhere, so that I am always prepared. Every Sunday evening, I outline the coming week and note any special activities.

How do you use an agenda? What things help you to stay organized?

Newest Arrivals from Lilly Pulitzer

It seems that every new arrival at Lilly Pulitzer keeps getting better and better. It almost makes me wish that I had 80 degree temperatures all year long so that I never had to say goodbye to summer.

As I mentioned to you last week, the Marlowe T-Shirt Dress is incredibly versatile and easy to wear. I'm thinking about wearing this dress that I pre-ordered on the first day of school. I couldn't wait to rip open the package!

The Miraflora Maxi Dress has a flattering empire waist. I love anything blue and white, so the blue crush open water print makes a winning pick.

Rossmore Dress is another easy to wear, stretchy and flattering t-shirt dress that is priced to sell at under $100. It's a fun way to add print and color to your wardrobe.

Here's the most exciting treat that hit Lilly Pulitzer stores today! You can purchase the Callahan Short in the coveted print Let's Cha Cha at retail price. I know that this might sound strange, but these shorts in this print have been selling for 2 or 3 times the original retail value on secondary markets like eBay and Facebook for months. If you want to buy these, I recommend that you buy quickly, because they are sure to be gone very soon.

Maryland Day Trip: Downtown Frederick

Frederick, Maryland is an excellent choice for a day trip from Baltimore, Annapolis, or DC. Offering scenic views, a rich history, and upscale shopping and dining options, Downtown Frederick delights visitors during any time of the year.

This itinerary is perfect for a half day trip. Park in one of the convenient parking decks and enjoy an easy and leisurely walk to all points mentioned in this article.

History lovers will appreciate the National Museum of Civil War Medicine located in the historic district. "During the Civil War, Frederick, a busy crossroads on America’s first National Road and first railroad, was witness to three Confederate invasions, thirty-eight skirmishes and two major battles (South Mountain and Monocacy) as hundreds of thousands of Northern and Southern soldiers marched through the community." Both my church and former school served as hospitals during the Civil War.

Delightful shops and delicious restaurants dot Market Street and Patrick Street as well as other side streets in Frederick, Maryland. Whether you're looking for antiques, household items, or clothing, you'll be sure to find unique treasures along the way.

I'm sharing some insider tips for shopping in some of my favorite stores in Downtown Frederick, Maryland so that you know exactly where to go.

I visit Simply Beautiful Boutique (143 North Market Street) at least once a week to see what new goodies have arrived. This preppy-approved store sells Simply Southern tees, Lilly Pulitzer, monogrammed jewelry, Crabberrie totes, and many other unique gifts. The owner is super friendly and helps you find the perfect gift.

If you love home goods with a vintage flair, Relish Decor (38 East Patrick Street) is a must-see store on your visit. This lifestyle boutique boasts a stylish selection of tabletop housewares, kitchen furnishings, and unique gifts. I adore this bar ware with a nautical theme. The glasses are slightly slanted; looks like they're already a bit tipsy!

Find upscale designer clothing, shoes, and handbags at Chic to Chic (30 East Patrick Street), a consignment store offering high-end, carefully curated selection. The store carries a variety of brands including, Tory Burch, Louis Vuitton, and Lilly Pulitzer. I recently spotted this rare shift in the coveted Shrimp Cocktail print in the store. Ellen, the store's owner, is a personal friend who always gives back to the community with outreach efforts and fundraisers.

Shop for your favorite man at Hunting Creek Outfitters (29 North Market Street), a full-line Orvis dealer. Everything that he could imagine is packed in this fabulous store, including Yeti coolers, Barbour jackets, and oodles of specialty items. Murray is always helpful and knowledgeable, aiming to please his customers. Show your Maryland pride with one of these stunning t-shirts. They were flying off the shelves when I last checked.

Preppy Essentials for High School

Time flies. It seems like just yesterday that the girls' back to school list included smocked dresses and Mary Janes, but this year, Natalia and Alexia start high school! Although their preppy style has (thankfully!) remained constant, the items on the shopping list change as they are older.

Today I'm sharing some preppy essentials that top the back to school shopping lists of high school students.

preppy essentials for high school students chacos longchamp lokai hunter boots lilly pulitzer
vest  //  earrings (30% off!) //  graphic tee  //  sandals (35% off!)
bag  //  iPhone 6 case  //  bracelet
shorts  //  tumbler  //  Hunter boots (40% off!)  //  shirt (40% off!)

Clothing: Currently, we're shopping for two types of clothing for back to school: school clothes and athletic clothes. For school, vests worn over a long sleeve tee or oxford shirt is popular. My girls prefer black yoga pants or stretchy pants over jeans, although they still do wear jeans quite a bit. Shep shirts, worn with everything from jeans to shorts, rotate heavily in preppy fall wardrobe. Natalia and Alexia still wear dresses and skirts to school several times a week and love to plan "fancy" days with their friends. Since most students practice sports after school, we carefully shop for athletic clothing, too. Long gone are the days of unattractive or frumpy gym shorts. Girls show their preppy flair with colorful athletic shorts with gorgeous embroidery or prints paired with cute graphic tees. They love Simply Southern and Lauren James shirts.

Shoes: Fashionable footwear is important for any type of weather. When the temperatures are still warm, girls prefer Chacos or Jack Rogers sandals. I always try to buy Jack Rogers on sale, like these. Hunter boots make a perfect choice for a rainy day and Frye boots top the list for cold weather style.

Accessories: Now that the girls have their Lilly Pulitzer agenda and plan to use their old Vera Bradley backpacks and matching lunch boxes from last year, I only need to pick up a few accessories and jewelry to complete their wardrobe. Right now, Lokai bracelets are popular along with anything monogrammed or from Dogeared.

Do you shop for "back to school?"
