A Lilly-Inspired Baby Shower and Nursery in Pink and Green

When a dear friend asked me to help throw her shower, she said one thing: “Make it feel like a Lilly print came to life.” That was all the brief I needed. Bright pink and palm green, a little citrus, lots of white, and the kind of cheerful that makes everyone in the room stand up a little straighter. Here is how we pulled it together — and how that same palette carried right into the nursery.

Why Lilly, and why pink and green

If you grew up loving that Palm Beach look, you know the story. Lilly Pulitzer started her label in 1959 when a juice-stand dress needed a print loud enough to hide the stains, and those happy, hand-painted colors became a whole way of dressing. Pink and green is the heart of it, and it happens to be the most forgiving baby-shower palette there is: it reads sweet without being saccharine, and it works whether you know you are welcoming a girl, a boy, or a wonderful surprise. Setting the shower table

We kept it simple and let the color do the heavy lifting:

• A green-and-white trellis tablecloth as the base, with hot-pink napkins folded at each place.
• Citrus everywhere — bowls of lemons and limes are the cheapest centerpiece in the world and instantly say Lilly.
• Palm leaves tucked behind a white cake with pink piping.
• A “wish for baby” card station at the door, hand-lettered on cardstock the same way we do our chalkboard decor.

For food, brunch is the move: a tiered stand of pastries, a big fruit board, and something savory and local. Around here that means a warm dish of Maryland crab dip, which disappears at every party I bring it to.

The nursery: pretty, and safe first

Here is where the giddy color meets a grown-up responsibility. A pink-and-green nursery can be a showstopper, but the crib itself has to follow the rules. The American Academy of Pediatrics is clear that a safe sleep space is bare: a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else — no bumpers, no pillows, no blankets, no stuffed animals, however much they match the bunting. Save the pretty quilt for the wall or the glider. Placement matters too: keep the crib away from windows, blind cords, and wall hangings.

With the crib handled, the rest is pure fun: grass-green grasscloth or a trellis wallpaper on one wall, a pink gingham roman shade, white furniture, and a gallery of cheerful prints. Bins and baskets keep the joyful chaos contained, and a DIY Lilly Pulitzer-painted accent or two ties it to the shower.

A Maryland hostess note

If you are hosting in the DMV, lean on the season. A late-spring or early-fall shower in a Chevy Chase or Bethesda backyard is hard to beat — the garden does half your decorating for you, and guests can drift between the porch and the lawn. For a rainy-day plan, the bright sunrooms and tearooms around Annapolis make a lovely backup. And do not over-schedule it: the best showers I have been to ran on the same unhurried rhythm as a slow family morning, with good light, good coffee, and room to just sit with the mom-to-be.
